Are oats overrated?

Instagram is awash with perfectly poised porridge bowls that look almost too good to eat and you can bet your fave fitness influencer raves about oats and all the benefits their breakfast of choice offers. But, are they really worth the hype?

Yep, it’s easy to place oats somewhere between avocado and green smoothies in the ‘overrated food’ ranks, but, trust us, these protein packed, fibre filled grains are more than just another food fad. As well as being full of essential nutrients, from iron and zinc to an array of different vitamins, oats are also a great source of fibre, great for keeping your digestive system in tip top condition.

Wanna know more? Here’s four reasons why oats are a great addition to your diet.

1) Oats are packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants

It would be easy to just throw this grain into the carb category and be done with it but oats offer so much more! As well as containing more protein and fat than most other grains, oats are also full of essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, helping to support a healthier you. Most oats contain magnesium, copper, iron and zinc, as well as a number of B vitamins. They may not look super healthy, but their nutrient composition says otherwise!

2) Oats provide slow release energy

If you’re looking for a breakfast that’ll see you right through to lunchtime, with limited stomach rumbles, then oats are a great option. They take longer to digest, meaning you’ll feel fuller for longer. Oat-packed snacks are also perfect for endurance training or on-the-go activity, ensuring you’re fuelled for whatever your day has in store.

3) Oats are a source of fibre

Now, we all know fibre’s good for us, but what benefits does it offer? Oats contain beta-glucan, a type of soluble fibre. The health benefits of consuming beta-glucan are endless, from decreased cholesterol and blood sugar levels, to improved gut health and feeling fuller for longer.

Fibre-rich foods are great for those who want to lose weight, as you’ll feel fuller for longer, meaning you’re less likely to consume unnecessary calories. They’re also ideal for those who struggle with digestive issues or those keen to lower their cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

4) Oats help improve blood sugar levels

As we just mentioned, oats are a go-to food for those keen on reducing their blood sugar levels. Elevated blood sugar levels can lead to a range of health issues, including diabetes. Filling up on oats helps to lower blood sugar levels – this is due to beta-glucans ability to delay the emptying of the stomach and absorption of glucose into the blood. So, if you’re set on keeping your blood sugar levels stable, oats could be a great addition to your diet.
